The average farmer income in Uganda is 795.70 USD a year which is approximately 2,679,917. USh a year
One major criticism of Universal Basic Income is that unconditional cash transfers discourage recipients from working. Universal Basic Income (UBI) constitutes an unconditional cash transfer that is provided to all residents on a long-term basis, regardless of income and with no “strings attached” (Marinescu, 2017).
Such unbased criticisms have led to the many Musoki’s of the world from accessing the help or rather push to bring them close to their goals and a sustainable livelihood.
But who is Musoki, well Musoki is a mother of 5 children and majorly a coffee farmer for income and cassava, beans for the more day to day source of meals for her and the family.
According to Research Gate (Finding the Technological Sweet Spot: The Smallholder Conservation Agriculture Maize Seeder, September 2017) the average farmer income in Uganda is 795.70 USD a year which is approximately 2,679,917. USh a year, the OSU Greenseeder represents 3.14% of yearly income or 11.47 days of labour wages as opposed to the and the Haraka rolling represents 29.54% of yearly income or 107.83 days of labour wages in Uganda.
With these being the average, the possibility that farmers like Musoki earn much less is a reality. A reality in which she was faced with difficulties / stumbles in achieving her goals and duties such as the payment of school fees for her children or the lack of adequate land so as to expand and improve on her farming.
The unconditional cash transfers have positively impacted Musoki’s life. As you read this, she has been able to purchase an acre of land at 2.5 million which is approximately 602 Euros.
Additionally Musoki has been able to pay school fees for her children on time, provide an improvement and consistent meal plan for them as well. Lastly her plans to construct permanent housing has seen her have the ability to financially afford it now with the current progress being her hiring able-bodied individuals who are currently creating / manufacturing bricks for her.
